Some Facebook users are experiencing difficulty accessing their Facebook applications. People are reporting a redirection problem. At first it seemed like a browser issue, so I asked my wife, who was experiencing this odd error, to try a different browser. She tried [slider title="MSIE"]Microsoft Internet Explorer[/slider] 8, and Google Chrome, and neither performed any differently from Firefox in this case. She also tried logging in from my computer, as I had no problems whatsoever, yet that just produced the same error message:
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete
So I started thinking about our accounts and what differences there might be. I knew that I created my account here in the States, just like she did – as opposed to my Yahoo account, for example, which was created when I still lived in Finland. Then I realized something I had noticed before as well: my URL, when accessing Facebook, doesn’t begin with www.facebook.com, but with www.new.facebook.com.
Facebook has tens of thousands of servers spread across a whole lot of datacentres. It is not strange to consider the possibility that this problem only affects a certain group of those servers.
Once my wife added “new” in her URL after logging in, she was able to use her Facebook applications. In some cases when she tried to click on something and got that message again, she went back and copied the URL from that link and added that “new” part to its URL, and hit enter.
Obviously this is not how Facebook should work, but until they get their act together, it may be a worthwhile solution to some.
