Running a website celebrating the wholesome values of fiscal conservatism is an expensive proposition. According to the Sunlight Foundation’s investigation, the RNC spent $1.4 million on hosting and redesigning GOP.com in the last six months. The majority of the money went towards bandwidth, apparently, since only $328,000 was spent on web development expenses. Altogether, that’s about $7,777 per day for having a website. Democrats.org’s hosting expenses for the same time period were $203,000, even though both GOP.com and Democrats.org get about the same amount of traffic.
That’s some expensive bandwidth!
The RNC is clearly eager to focus on freshening up the image of the GOP brand. The new website design admittedly looks good, but is lacking in content. The “Republican Accomplishments” page lists great GOP achievements, although neglecting to mention the demolishing of the Constitution with the Patriot Act. The accomplishment list ends, not surprisingly, with 2004.
Meanwhile, entering “Joe the Plumber” into the GOP.com search engine produces no results.
